Battle of the Atlantic Heroes: Ross Long

Battle of the Atlantic Heroes / April 30, 2021

Ross Long of Hamilton, Ont., had an interesting experience during the Battle of the Atlantic.

After enlisting in the Royal Canadian Navy, he was assigned to His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Loche Alvie and thereafter HMCS Huron, tasked with running special supplies and personnel to Murmansk in the Soviet Union. On war’s end, HMC Ships Huron and Haida, and several other Royal Navy ships, were sent to Trondheim, Norway, to take custody of surrendered U-boats.

After the Second World War, Ross Long was eventually promoted to the rank Chief Petty Officer, and was a superior to his brother when he was transferred to HMCS Huron.
